coming alive/making Christ known

Someone posed a very serious question to me recently, and it echoed in my head, haunting me for several days. Why is Pulse going around on so many mission trips? Do these trips serve Pulse’s mission? I find it very important to question myself periodically. So, I was thankful to hear this, but also a tiny bit frightened. Well, frightened enough to have me nervously think about it for days and days. Good thing, because I needed to know this.

Before I ever came to this ministry it was given a name and a purpose. Pulse. Come alive and make Christ known. The name symbolizes two images, one a ripple effect from an epicenter that spreads throughout the surrounding area, and second a symbol of life, a heartbeat. Pulse had that in place before I joined, and hopefully it won’t end while I’m here.

These service learning trips, or mission trips, are merely how we, Pulse, live out our faith. People may ask, or we might wonder, “Why do you do so many mission trips?” Our faith is big, and it is alive. It tells us how to be. This world tells us to cool it down. The world would rather us believe that college students do not have the capacity to serve the mountainous needs around the globe or even in the south bay. James concludes his second chapter with this: “As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead.” We are Pulse, a symbol of life. This is merely our faith influencing our lifestyles, interrupting and even taking over our daily lives. We have so many service projects and trips because we want everybody to have an opportunity to come alive and make Christ known. It is because our faith is alive.
